The Abstract Expressionist painter Lee Krasner created a series of black-and-white collages during 1953-55 which brought together new marks and cut-up fragments of existing artworks. These collages were an attempt by Krasner to resuscitate work that had become stale or stagnant, and arguably represent her most significant work. The general palette of these collages reflects the dominance of black and white in American art at this time, and can also be seen in the paintings of Franz Kline, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Motherwell.
