John BRACK

East Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia 1920 – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 1999

Portrait of Barbara Blackman (1954) Title Notes: The Monash Uni. catalogue "John Brack drawings 1945-79", of 9/6-10/7/1981, lists this work as "Sketch for portrait of Barbara Blackman" (cat. no. 17), and as being in the collection of Mr & Mrs Fred Williams. By comparison, Robert Lindsay in "John Brack - A retrospective" (NGV 1987) p142 and cat. no. 146 gives the title of this work as "Sketch of life class model" and states that it was first known as "Sketch for portrait of Barbara Blackman". He gives a date of 1957 and lists the owner as Mrs Lyn Williams. His re-identification is at odds with the fact that the work was donated to NGA by Barbara Blackman as a sketch portrait of herself, done in 1954 (see file 83/0991-03 f143). The latter identification is supported by comments on file by Betty Churcher ast the time of the gift (f149). Therefore the title "Portrait of Barbara Blackman" has been retained for NGA purposes. Not listed in Sasha Grishin's 1990 catalogue raisonne. (KA 4/6/03)
