The painter Wassily Kandinsky worked in a number of art and design projects in Russia’s post-revolutionary period from 1918 to 1921. He produced several designs for ceramics, including this example for the State Porcelain Manufactory, which took over the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St Petersburg and produced ceramics decorated with revolutionary designs and motifs painted on older porcelain blanks from the earlier factory.
