  • Lesley Dumbrell’s Last light draws inspiration from the natural world. It is a decorative mosaic of angular pieces, each one unique, while the painting is unified as a whole by the limited palette of colours. The flickering of individual elements draws the viewer’s attention back and forth across the work, punctuated at points by fragments of bright blue. Last light is evocative of an approaching summer evening, with glimpses of the fading sky through the rustling foliage. The leaves are, however, not those of a native gum but rather of a mature maple or oak tree, perhaps in a quiet city park; a peaceful and contemplative sanctuary from the constant bustle of the metropolis.
