No title (jungle at night): from the portfolio "Hawaii". 1978 Materials & Technique: photographs, dye transfer colour photograph
Misrach’s use of large-format cameras and transformative, saturated use of colour has made him a seminal figure in photography from the 1970s. At the time he made this work, he often worked at night with strobe lighting that illuminated the landscape around him in a distinctly uncanny, surreal manner. In 1978 he began working in colour on journeys to Greece, Louisiana, and Hawaii. The resulting images have a strange, unsettling artificiality, like stage sets.
