The photo unit of American president Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Resettlement Administration (RA) was set up publicise the living conditions suffered by the rural poor during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In 1935 Arthur Rothstein was the first photographer sent out to document rural and small-town America by Roy Stryker, head of the RA’s Photo Unit (the RA became the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 1937).
