With a growing reputation and unconventional style, Viennese-born Model migrated to the United States in 1938. She immersed herself in the vitality she sensed emanating from the streets of New York City. Model inhabited the role of street photographer completely, tapping into the dynamism that the city was becoming famous for. A key feature of Model’s work is images of women in the city—their shoes on the pavement, shadows and reflections in the window displays. Model’s Modernist vision offers a unique counterpoint to the traditionally male subject matter that the street photography genre is known for.
