Tertiary Insc: page 33 [first sheet] black lettering , u.c.l., "COLOPHON / THIS IS NOT A BOOK is an original 36 page book by Helen Frankenthaler, hand printed at TGL. The book consists of nine color intaglios, two color lithographs with lettering as half title and full title pages, plus colophon, copyright page, and four pages of text printed in lithograph. The APOLOGIA and NOTES were written by the artist. The first seven copper plates for this book were drawn in November 1995 at the artists' studio, followed by another five copper plates in January 1996. Collaboration between the artist and KET in the design and creation of this work began in July 1996 at TGL. Thirty additional copperplates (23 photo etching and 7 aquatint and mezzotint), plus four pochoir stencils, were made and proofed at the workshop from July 1996 to January 1997. 37 of the 42 plates made were used for the prints in this book./ Preparation and processing of intaglio plates by Anthony Kirk. Proofing and edition printing of copper plates by Kirk, Brian, Maxwell, Christopher Creyts, Kimberley Bursic, and Todd Elkin, assisted by Nancy Bressler. Pochoir stencil making and stenciling by Tyler. Lithography Plate making and proofing by Lee Funderburg, John Hutcheon, and Tyler. Edition printing of aluminium lithography plates on offset lithograohy press by Tyler and Hutcheon. The white printing papers were handmade at the workshop by Tom Strianese and Hutcheon./ The bound edition is fifty with fourteen artists' proofs, two Trial Proofs, one Right to Print Proof, two Printer's Proofs, one TGL Impression, one Archive, and two Presentation Proofs. The Color Trial Proofs, Work Proofs and Cancellation Proofs are not bound. In addition, three of the intaglios were published individually as seperate signed and numbered edition of sixty plus proofs. All books are signed and numbered by the artist on the colophon page. Typography design by Lorraine Ferguson. Text set in Adobe Caslan. Bookbinding executed by Judith Ivry in cloth and quarter leather with type stamped 24k gold.
