Creation Notes: Robert Motherwell began collaborating with Kenneth Tyler on 'El Negro' in 1981. The book was editioned in 1983. 'Through black emerge purified' was started on the 22 February 1981. The RTP was printed on the 22 of September 1982. The print was finished on the 21 October 1982 and the plate was cancelled on the 14 February 1983.

Edition Notes: Colour lithograph printed in three colours: black, red and blue. Robert Motherwell prepared the nineteen lithographic images in 'El Negro' on Mylar and acetate sheets using Paintstiks, grease pencils and alcohol tusche which he applied with brushes and a bamboo pen. The images were transferred to aluminium plates by Lee Funderburg. The plates were printed by Funderburg and Roger Campbell on a flat bed offset press. Papermaking by Steve Reeves and Tom Strianese. This image is one of seven images that were printed separately in editions (without text) of 98 plus 14 artist's proofs numbered I-XIV.
