Edition Notes: Black, red, ochre oil crayons used. This Mylar sheet was used to make positive continuous tone offset plates. Robert Motherwell prepared the seventeen lithographic images in 'El Negro' on Mylar and acetate sheets using Paintstiks, grease pencils and alcohol tusche which he applied with brushes and a bamboo pen. The images were transferred to aluminium plates by Lee Funderburg. The plates were printed by Funderburg and Roger Campbell on a flat bed offset press. Papermaking by Steve Reeves and Tom Strianese. The 'El Negro' poem was written by Rafael Alberti (with translation by Vincente Lleo Canal) and offset printed, Spanish in black and English in grey. The introductory preface was written by Jack Flam. Sequence of prints: front end leaf, title page, Negro, preface, Mourning, poem, Night arrived, Elegy black black, Black banners, Black of the echo, Eternal black, Black wall of Spain, Airless black, Black concentrated, Black in black, Forever black, Invisible stab, Black lament, Black with no way out, Gypsy curse, Black undone by tears, Through black emerge purified, Poor Spain, colophon page, and back end leaf. Seven lithographs from 'El Negro' were published in seperate editions.
