The frontispiece photograph has several places where contemporary spotting solution was applied (as in all copies) to cover small imperfections caused by dust on the original negative, otherwise the tonal range is full and bright in all the plates. Contemporary binding of quarter red morocco with marbled paper over boards. Five gilt raised bands and gilt titling on spine. Slightly intermittent foxing throughout text block, else in near fine condition. Housed in a new clamshell box of quarter calf and linen over boards, with gilt title label affixed. The photographs show Duchenne's experiments of induced expression of emotion by use of electrical stimulation of the facial muscles. It is a pioneer work in physiological psychology, and with Duchenne's album for his L' électrisation localisée... issued the same year, it is the first medical publication to use photographs from life. Duchenne was assisted in making the photographs by the younger Nadar (Adrien Tournachon). The first edition was publish in 1862 in a very small edition of two volumes, one text, one atlas with photographic plates, and again as an octavo with the text and plates bound in one volume - the plates were reduced and made into composite plates. It was issued again in 1876 as an octavo edition. Every edition is rare. TRUTHFUL LENS 49; Garrison & Morton A MEDICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY 4973.
