Allan's work has often questioned established ideas of what a photograph should look like and what it should depict. Her Yooralla at 20 past 3 records the painstakingly slow progress of a mother and daughter and turns the event into something worth slowing down enough to observe and reflect upon. Allan witnessed this unassuming moment, almost a nonmoment, frequently because her house in Carlton was across the street from the Yooralla School for Disabled Children. Through the introduction of nuanced and delicate hand colouring, the photographs mirror their subject as a labour of love.
