Hall began painting at art school but switched to photography in her second year. She continued her studies abroad in the United Kingdom before completing a master's degree at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester in the United States of America. Returning to Australia in the early 1980s she worked for the first time in the studio, creating imagery from collaged elements in which she explored the concept of a lost harmony between humanity and the cosmos. This area of inquiry had arisen from an interest in the writings of Enlightenment thinkers and might have related to Hall's mother, Ruby Payne-Scott, having been a pioneer in the area of astronomy in Australia; both her parents were also devoted naturalists. Hall enriches the already multi-layered surface with selective and painterly use of photographic toners.
