Edition Notes: An artist's book comprising 48 plates of hardground and softground etchings. One extra plate is a loose leaf etching on white, wove, machine made paper. The etchings were all done by the artist for his own pleasure between 1805 and 1814 and were not really intended for publication. They are now considered among the best soft-ground etchings done in the 19th Century. The Liber was only published in 1838 in this edition by Bohn as the final volume in Bohn's five-part series of Cotman works (see Gordon Ray; The Illustrator and The Book in England from 1790 - 1914). Inscribed within the plate beneath the composition, 'Drawn, inscribed and published by J.S.Cotman 1819'.
