With the financial support of four South Australian businessmen, Hans Heysen was able to study and paint in Europe from 1899 to the end of 1903.
To ensure the short-term returns for their support and fostering the longer-term potential of Heysen’s talent, the investors signed an agreement in October 1899 requiring Heysen to report monthly on his progress, movements and expenses, and to send completed works back to Australia on a regular basis.
