Brake had a long career as a photojournalist, working for the photoagency Magnum from 1954. This image featured in a photo-essay on the monsoon, published in LIFE magazine in 1961. It shows the swollen Ganges River from the air. Brake had achieved what many thought almost impossible, using the relatively slow colour films available to shoot the rainy season. His photographs were praised at the time for their lyricism, and the way his use of colour told the story of the annual deluge.
