Materials & Technique: jewellery, bracelets, leather, drawing pins, gold
This animated and engaging work is based on the abstracted form and pattern of a koi fish. David Bielander does not replicate the creature in exact detail, but rather sketches it in a type of three-dimensional drawing on the body, using formed leather overlaid with ‘scales’ of overlapping bi-coloured enamelled drawing pins and gold clasps. Manipulating the structural properties of these materials gives this work a coiled, elastic energy on the skin, capturing the light with every movement to evoke the visual flash of the fish when seen in water.
