Green originally trained as a printmaker and later took up photography in the early 1980s. Her work reflects on photography and its place in society and is marked by an interest in both history and innovation. For her series The bridge and the willow, Green brings together two hand coloured photographs from her own archive alongside fragments of prints from an album of late nineteenth-century hand coloured Japanese prints in her personal collection. Hand coloured photography from Meiji-period Japan represents one of the great flowerings of the technique both in its volume and quality. In these works, Green draws together her contemporary practice and the history upon which it draws. She brings these images into the present by digitising them: the prints, once subject to intervention by hand, have been scanned and digitally hand coloured with an early edition of the imageediting software Photoshop.
