These three portraits come from Maynard's most recent series of twelve portraits of men from his hometown on Flinders Island. These are men Maynard knows from around the island, and the portraits are the result of an extended, collaborative process of conversation and friendship-building. 'It was quite some time ago', Maynard has explained, 'that I began a close observation and inquiry into how our men in the community were being affected by their diminishing role in society'. He is concerned with the ways Aboriginal men are affected by intergenerational trauma which can be traced back to the impact of colonisation and more recent political, social and cultural disenfranchisement. Maynard sees the portraits forming part of a larger historical record: 'It is hoped that one day a future generation will come to look into the eyes of these men and see the essence that is being communicated, their sincerity, their searching, their journey, burdened by the weight of a brutal history they continued with an enduring spirit'.
