Ethel Carrick and E. Phillips Fox had embarked on a painting trip through the Pacific when the First World War broke out in 1914. Returning to Australia, they postponed their return to Paris. Just one year later, Fox died in Melbourne, prompting Carrick to return to Europe in 1916.
