Creation Notes: de Balk took over Joseph Turner's Moorabool street studio in April 1865 and had relocated to Sydney by 1870, he is using Turner's supply of ambrotype cases, so posibly made soon after taking over Turner's first Geelong studio location.
Materials & Technique: photographs, 1/2 plate ambrotype, colour dyes, gilt appliquee, Support: brown leather case with tooled decirative bands, red velvet upper lid linining with floral cut pattern, gilt mat, metal hings. nb. Case opens upwards.

Primary Insc: signed, engraved manuscript on lower left edge of gilt surround, "E. de Balk, Geelong"
Secondary Insc: inscribed, engraved manuscript on gilt surround, lower right, "Turner's Gallery"
