Like many artists who used the medium during the 1970s and 1980s, Stannage often examined the extent to which photography precedes or follows an experience. The Polaroid prints depicted in these works-each of which has been brightly hand coloured in a way that contrasts with the realism of the black-and-white images within which they sit-addresses this concern. Stannage's pictures received some hostile attention. The iconic modernist photographer Max Dupain, for example, characterised her use of colour as akin to a stimulant that, in the end, had no significance: 'an emotional seducer like the tasty chemical additive in one's favourite jam'.
