Barrow has been active as an editor, advisor and curator of photography throughout his career, and has extensive experience teaching the history and aesthetics of photography. In this series, made between 1974 and 1978, he scratched an ‘x’ onto the negatives to signal his dissatisfaction with both the fine art print, with its immaculate, flat surface and seeming objectivity, and the lack of critical engagement with the medium he saw among photographers and audience alike. He wants us to question the photographic rendition of information and what we might be able to deduce from it.
