‘Are not shells, bodies, clouds as much of today as machines? Does it make any difference what subject matter is used to express a feeling toward life!’, Weston asked in 1927. Art could be modern without having to depict industrial themes and the nude was of enduring interest. Weston gets in close, filling the frame, fragmenting, and emphasising the texture of skin. These two contact prints are among many studies made by Weston of Charis Wilson, his future wife,in the year that they met. They are remarkable for their intense sensuality.
