  • In the early 1930s (perhaps in the tumultuous years of 1932–33) Margaret Michaelis visited Cracow, not far from her hometown of Dzieditz. Michaelis documented the various activities taking place in the Jewish marketplace, lavishing a great deal of care on the prints she produced.

    These small, modest photographs carry a retrospective burden: the scenes they depict were wiped out following Germany’s invasion of Poland
