Primary Insc: not signed. dated and titled lower centre of backing in pen and black ink 'Gold Escort Melbourne 1852'. inscribed upper left of sheet in black pencil, '3 abreast'. inscribed lower right of sheet in black pencil, 'all with little straw hats/but... (illeg) drivers with a cap'. inscribed verso of backing lower edge in ink, 'The men of Escort wore little straw hats, and red shirts or jumpers. /The drivers wore caps covered with white.'
