From 1904 Picasso lived in France and was a dominant figure in the avant-garde art movement. He produced what became to be thought of as the first Cubist painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in 1907 and was, throughout his life, a most original and versatile artist, often making radical changes in his style. His 1937 painting Guernica immortalised the destruction on 26 April 1937 of this Basque town by German aircraft during the Spanish Civil War. In the latter part of his life, he became the grand old master of modern art. He continued to work up to his death in 1972.
