Pl.4 Turnip [Navet] Die Rube (Leaf 8 recto)
1896 Description: from La Plante et ses applications ornementales, deuxieme serie [The Plant and its ornamental applications, second series]
Materials & Technique: books, prints, pochoir, lithography on paper
This is one of 144 illustrations in a portfolio, produced under the direction of Eugéne Grasset, teacher, artist and pioneer of Art Nouveau. This delicately drawn plant is followed by two illustrations of it interpreted into an array of decorative designs and motifs. The book includes examples of how these ornamental interpretations could be applied to decorative objects such as fabrics, ceramics, wallpapers, furniture and metalwork. The publication was intended as an example of how artists and crafts practitioners could borrow directly from nature.
