Woman holding child [(Woman holding child)] c.1960 Materials & Technique: photographs, gelatin silver photograph
In my photographs I want to look at life—at the commonplace things as if I just turned a corner and ran into them for the first time. Leon Levinstein 1955
Growing up in West Virginia, after moving to New York City in 1946, Levinstein worked as a graphic designer and devoting all his spare time to photographing on the city streets. A master of classic street photography, his skill in capturing scenes with a raw, gestural immediacy is always combined with a marked concern and compassion for people on the fringes of society.
