Edition Notes: Kenneth Noland's 'Handmade Paper Project' was the first papermaking collaboration to take place at the workshop in the paper mill Kenneth Tyler designed and completed in 1978. Noland collaborated with Tyler and Lindsay Green for several months that year, creating nearly 400 unique paperworks in five series, namely 'Circle I' (110 works), 'Circle II' (110 works), 'Horizontal stripes' (104 works), 'Diagonal stripes' (27 works) and 'Paris' (21 works). Noland experimented with colours and textures, mixing pulp slurries with a variety of pigments and dyes. He often added bits of coloured paper, wool, and silk thread to the pulp and placed bits of material on the couched and applied layers. This material was embedded in the pulp by direct application and pressing and the couching of layers of cotton gauze or colored pulp on top of it as in Circle I, Circle II and Horizontal Stripes, For Circle I, Circle II and Horizontal Stripes V and VII. Kim Halliday screenprinted or John Hutcheson lithographed monoprint layers of transparent inks on some of the papers after they had been pressed and dried.
