Bernd and Hilla Becher began working together in 1959 and married in 1961. They have travelled the world from their native Germany, photographing industrial structures – here the mechanism used for loading coal into railroad cars. These most utilitarian of buildings, with their idiosyncratic differences and necessary similarities, are turned by the Bechers into objects worthy of contemplation. Although revered in art circles, their images have important documentary well as aesthetic significance. They have been studied extensively by engineering and architectural historians.
