Like Frank before him, Shore took a car, a grant and a camera and headed out onto the freeway to find his vision of the real America. He worked with two very different styles of camera. With a 35mm compact camera he captured fleeting and ephemeral ‘road culture’ moments such as a hamburger freshly delivered by a waitress in a roadside diner or the glowing interior of a motel refrigerator. With a characteristically loose employment of the large-format view camera, Shore made what can look like casual snapshots. Closer inspection, however, reveals images that bristle with detail and seduce with subtle compositional nuance.
