This portrait of Cotton’s friend Jean Lorraine is also known as Portrait by candlelight, on account of the fact that the light source was just one candle. The portrait was taken in the Dupain studio after nightfall, with the studio in complete darkness bar the single candle, which Cotton used to illuminate Jean’s face for the 90-second exposure.
