In 1977, Sugimoto began a long-standing project which involved photographing the screens of American cinemas and drive ins for the entire duration of a film screening. Using a large-format film camera placed as far from the screen as possible, Sugimoto’s photographs used the light emitted by the screen to illuminate the architectural spaces of some of America’s finest cinemas. These miraculous photographs, with their extended duration, remember the very earliest photographic images - daguerreotypes of busy Parisian streets, which had been emptied of people by the photographic process’s long exposure.
