Ettore Sottsass was one of the most expressive and original designers working in Italy and the key figure in the Memphis group of designers, established in Milan in 1981. He moved away from a functional approach to design towards a more spontaneous and intuitive method of deriving new forms to renew its ‘language’. This fruit stand is typical of Sottsass’s approach to design, combining vigorous forms with the confident and flamboyant use of material that characterised Italian industrial design of the 1970s and 1980s.
