Materials & Technique: metalwork, snuff boxes, snuff box: silver, silver gilt; presenbtation case: various Australian woods, silver mount snuff box: embossed, chased and engraved. Presentation box: various Australian woods, including huon pine, musk cedar.

Primary Insc: stamped on inside of lid and base of silver box: "CB", [an emu] [ a kangaroo]
Secondary Insc: inscribed on cartouche on lid: ADVANCE AUSTRALIA/PRESENTED/by the Licenced (sic) victuallers of the City of/MELBOURNE/and friends to Mr. W.J. Sugden on his/resignation of the Office/of/CHIEF CONSTABLE/in testimony of their respect and esteem/for the integrity of his character and/his upright, manly and honourable/conduct during his period of office, and/of their sincere wishes for his future prosperity/and welfare./MELBOURNE NOV. 1st 1848".
