The American photographer Duane Michals is quoted as saying, ‘I believe in the imagination. What I cannot see is infinitely more important than what I can see’. You might think that this would be a problem for a photographer, and yet Michals has spent much of his career attempting to use the medium to show that which cannot be expressed visually. In doing so he is part of an exciting tradition which explores the world beyond the material, one of poetic and mystical beauty.
