Allan trained as a painter in the late 1960s and took up photography in 1974. In place of the isolation she felt accompanied a painting practice, photography supported a life of social interaction and engagement. For Allan, the moment when she feels closest to her subjects, a moment of profound connectedness and the point of greatest pleasure for her, is the moment when she sits ready at her desk with the photographic print i'1 front of her, poised to commence the hand colouring. Over-painted, the photographs become subjective-personal and individual. Indeed, hand colouring is part of an investigation into the interplay between the outer and inner worlds that characterises Allan's oeuvre.
