Materials & Technique: glass, vessels, blown glass
Dale Chihuly's work is among the most flamboyant of contemporary American glass, a spectacular combination of technical bravura and visual audacity that has received worldwide attention. Working in Seattle, Chihuly co-founded the nearby Pilchuck School of glass, where glass artists from all over the world can work together, sharing ideas and techniques. This inclusive approach informs Chihuly's work, which draws from and extends the great glassblowing traditions of Venice and has, in turn, influenced contemporary Venetian glass.
The fluid form and slick surface of this work suggests the process of forming, stretching and expanding molten glass. Produced by a team of glassworkers, working under Chihuly's close direction, it reflects, in multicoloured glass, the vivid conceptual drawings that he produces for each object.
