Joseph Kosuth was born on 31 January 1945 in Toledo, Ohio. He studied at the Cleveland Art Institute, Ohio (1963-64), and the School of Visual Arts, New York (1965-67). While at the School of visual Arts he organised a visiting artists program, bring Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and Ad Reinhardt to lecture. In 1965 he abandoned painting and began making conceptual works which he exhibited in 1967 at the short-lived, so-called Museum of Normal Art he established in New York. In 1969 Kosuth held his first solo exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, where he has continued to exhibit regularly. In the same year he became the American editor of the journal Art and Language and participated in the exhibition 'When Attitude Becomes Form: Works-Concepts-Processes-Situations' at the Kunsthalle, Berne, and Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. He was represented in most major exhibitions which documented the growing recognition of conceptual art, including 'Information' at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1970 and 'Konzept-Kunst' at the Kunstmuseum, Basle, in 1972. Kosuth became co-editor of the short-lived journal The Fox in 1975, and was given a retrospective exhibition at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, in 1978. Kosuth exhibits regularly in major international centres, mounting installations I 1990 at the Brooklyn Museum and at Galeria Juana de Aizuru, Madrid. He lives and works in New York.
