Maddison was Victoria's first female builder's labourer before she began working as a photographer in 1976. She was part of an active and vibrant community of women artists who circulated around the Women's Theatre Group at the Pram Factory in Melbourne. Her good friend Ponch Hawkes taught her how to take and process photographs, and Micky Allan, another friend and Pram Factory associate, introduced her to the practice of hand colouring prints. Maddison has maintained a longstanding commitment to the idea that photography can influence social change. Her photographs often consider the ways in which politics informs and engages with everyday life; to that end, they are often concerned with the personal stories of friends and family.
