Inscribed lower left in black pencil, 'The joyful Rain, the solemn Rain the life-giving / Rain That maketh glad the Earth / after Summer.'. Inscribed verso lower edge in ink, 'The Solemn Rain, the Life-teeming Rain! that comes at the bidding of the North Wind, and fills the Earth with Gladness and beauty!'.
